Sewage Treatment Units, Systems and Plants

There are so many different sewage treatment plants and sewage systems on the market that you probably have no idea how to choose which plant is the right one for you?  The cheapest sewage treatment plant to buy may not be the most economical option as running costs and installation costs vary enormously between sewage systems. Waste Tech's sewage consultants can help you.

All sewage treatment plants are suitable for direct discharge to a ditch or watercourse, subject to Environment Agency  Consent to discharge.   Septic Tanks are NOT, and expensive soakaways, with a limited lifespan, must be constructed to dispose of all septic tank effluent.

Questions you should ask the plant manufacturers are:-

How often should it be emptied?  Emptying is usually the most expensive aspect of sewage treatment plant running costs. All of the 3 stage sewage treatment plants require  sewage treatment plants digest the solids and have a 3 to 5 yearly emptying interval.

Does it have a Primary Settlement Tank?  If it does, then it is a 3 stage sewage treatment plant as described above.  Primary Settlement Tanks do not tend to be odourless as gases can escape through the lid, particulary when the bath, etc. is emptied, displacing air through the lid of the plant.  It is called Primary Settlement Tank Odour.

Does the sewage treatment plant rely on internal moving parts?  Moving parts wear out and sewage is very corrosive.  Replacement parts and labour can be very expensive.  For an idea of what is involved in the running of a Biodisc, please click on http://www.klargester.com/pdf/PD0093-18BA-BCOwnersHandbook.pdf for the owner's handbook

How thick is the fibreglass?  This can vary between plants from about 3mm to 6mm, depending on the make of sewage treatment unit. Obviously, the thicker the better.

Does the plant require concrete for the installation? Usually, the thinner walled tanks require concrete surround for strength. Concrete is expensive and if a concrete base/backfill is required, this greatly increases the installation time and cost.  These sewage systems require expert installation as you cannot reposition the sewage treatment plant if the levels are found to be incorrect

What do you see when the sewage plant is installed?  Some sewage treatment systems are an eyesore, either because the lids are enormous and protrude above ground level, or because there are multiple lids on view.  Some wastewater treatment units have unsightly Kiosks containing compressors and timers etc.

How much is the annual servicing cost?  Servicing costs also vary enormously, from £75.00 to over £300.00, depending the complexity of the sewage plant. A general rule is, the simpler the sewage system, the cheaper the service.

How long is the warranty?  This varies from 1 year to 25 years, depending on the sewage treatment plant manufacturer.

You will need a CONSENT TO DISCHARGE from the Environment Agency to discharge from any sewage treatment unit to a watercourse.  It is not difficult to obtain and we will help you with the forms free of charge.

We give INDEPENDENT advice on all the above sewage treatment plants and sewage systems
