How the DM sewage treatment unit differs from other units
The DM is a 2 stage extended aeration sewage treatment unit. There is NO first stage primary settlement tank, as with 3 stage sewage treatment units like Klargester, Titan, etc, which settle the solids out in the primary settlement tank for regular emptying via tanker. The DM digests the solids as well as the organic material in the liquid part of the effluent, achieving 95%+ Total Solids Digestion. This means that the emptying interval is extended up to 5 years, even for the 15 to 20 person units which typically have to be emptied every 3 months when using 3 stage sewage systems. This saves a fortune on the running costs.
Primary settlement tanks also tend to smell.
The DM also has the EN12566 new certification for wastewater treatment units and has undergone extensive testing in Germany for 10 months. The effluent is tested every day under strenuous conditions and the DM passed every test. Some extended aeration units have NEVER been tested by anyone and are merely copies of the extremely successful DM tank, but without any certification. BEWARE of copycat units which claim to be 'designed to' a certification standard rather than actually having the standard itself as they have either never been tested by anyone or have failed to attain the certification!
DM sewage treatment system
The DM unit is the original Extended Aeration sewage treatment system in the UK and is based on the 'Nayadic' American unit. Thousands of these proven sewage systems have been sold since the unit was originally brought in from the USA in the mid 1990's, though it is now made in the UK. The Condor ASP sewage treatment system is based on the same extended aeration principle. The DM sewage system has the new EN12566 2005 certification, soon to be mandatory for all sewage treatment units.
The DM sewage treatment range is specifically designed for single or small groups of houses, small pubs, campsites and commercial offices situated away from mains sewerage. There are 9 models in the range; the DM range; 5 different DMS units catering from 1 to 20 persons and the 4 units in the DMC range from 21 to 55 persons. DM units are CE marked and are certified to EN12566-3 2005, the future wastewater treatment unit standard. This is due to come into effect sometime in the next few years. They are fully compliant with UK Building Regulations.
The wastewater treatment range caters for between 1 and 55 persons
The DM sewage treatment unit offers a very discreet solution to on-site wastewater treatment as the small lid is flush with the ground and unlike its rivals; the compressor is housed in a dry safety kiosk out of the moist atmosphere in the unit.
The DM unit itself is craftsman built, very robust, superb quality, using thicker fibreglass than its rivals and an all-fibreglass internal construction with NO metal struts to corrode. For this reason it carries a LIFETIME process guarantee. Compare this with the competition. Unlike the Biodisc, the DM has NO internal moving parts.
How the DM sewage treatment unit works

-
Air from the compressor housed under the lid is piped to a diffuser in the draft tube.
-
Raw sewage enters the aeration chamber and air surging up from the draft tube aerates the sewage, causing an aeobic bacterial colony to establish in the aeration chamber and digest the organic matter in the sewage.
-
As more raw sewage enters the aeration chamber, an equal amount of effluent displaces through the open bottom into the clarifier.
-
The quiet conditions in the clarifier allow all the suspended solids to sink down to the bottom of the clarifier and they are drawn back up the draft tube by the upward flow of air for further digestion in the aeration chamber.
-
The clear effluent rises to the top of the clarifier and passes over a wier from where it is discharged to a soakawy or watercourse.
The DM constantly digests its own waste products and recycles the sewage for further digestion which is how it achieves 95%+ total solids digestion
The sewage treatment unit can be adapted at the build stage to suit any inlet or outlet level
Installation .
The DM sewage unit is simple, quick and cheap to install as the DMS models have the option of NO concrete for the installation if desired. They require only soil/sand/gravel as backfill as they are robust, quality tanks. Most other sewage treatment units require a concrete base and a min. 300mm concrete backfill, which makes the installation much more expensive The DM sewage treatment range is typically installed in under 3 hours.
The sewage treatment unit itself is installed in two halves and the top is eye-bolted to the bottom before the tank is leveled, backfilled with the soil/ gravel and filled with water. The compressor sits in a kiosk next to the unit which is designed to keep it safe and dry.
If you have a high water table, he DM sewage treatment unit can be held down via 4 simple metal ground anchors which take 10 mins. to install. Backfill with soil/sand/gravel.
DM range Process Performance
The DM sewage treatment unit is now sold extensively throughout France (in the face of the impending EU Wastewater Legislation) and has the brochure translated into French if required. Click Here for all the French sewage system rules and regulations.
The DM range extends up to 55 persons, making it ideal for small pubs, campsites etc. as 3 stage sewage units of this size have a maximum emptying interval of 12 to 13 weeks. These units have an interval of up to 5 years for the units up to 20 persons and at least annually for the larger DMC plants.
Blower Installation
The blower is supplied with a kiosk housing to protect it from the elements - see the photo on the right - the kiosk is buried in the ground and the lid can be seen in the foreground. It can be sited in a flower border or shrubbery. It should be connected to a single-phase supply (230v) via a suitable IP55 rated weatherproof socket with RCD, by a qualified electrician. Included is 10m of airline to connect between the blower and the tank. Further distances can cause problems with reduced air supply reaching the unit. Please contact us for advice on this and click on our installation manual for DM sewage units
Process performance is subject to strict adherence to the DM installation, operation & maintenance manuals, user guide and a start up period of 6-12 weeks depending on plant loadings and water temperature. The manufacturers have a policy of continual product development and the above information may be subject to change without notice. These units are fully compliant with the British Water Code of Practice.
Tech Specs for the DM sewage unit Range
